The North Slope Interceptor pipe carries wastewater from Lantzville and north Nanaimo to the Wellington Pump Station. Waves have eroded some of the beach and exposed some sections of the interceptor pipe. The project would add cobble fill and four rocky headlands to cover and protect the exposed section of the interceptor pipeline.

    Construction was complete on August 8th, 2023. Photos of the completed headlands are in the gallery. The RDN thanks the community for their cooperation and understanding during construction.

  • Construction Contract Awarded

    The construction contract was awarded to Copcan Civil. Erosion protection works are scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 4th and continue for approximately 6 weeks. All applicable permits have been obtained and a full time environmental monitor will be onsite for the duration of the work.

    The sign, bench, barriers, etc. at the Oar Road beach access will be removed temporarily and then replaced once the project is complete. Pedestrian access will be maintained with safeguards in place. A material and equipment storage area at the end of Oar Road will limit parking space. Please observe all signage and traffic control personnel for the safety of workers and the public.

    All the tenders received for the construction of this project were well over the approved budget. The RDN has cancelled the tender and will re-evaluate the project for the summer of 2023.

    The RDN has made an Application for Approval under the Canadian Navigable Waters Act for this project. This application was open for public comment between March 22, 2022 and April 21, 2022.
