Lighthouse Country Regional Trail

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) has created a plan to increase the accessibility of its services, facilities and spaces for residents and patrons. To support plan development, the RDN established an internal committee with a majority of members being persons with disabilities, guardians of persons with disabilities and/or representing a disability-serving organization. The committee, supported by two external universal design and accessibility consultants, have created the first ever RDN 2023-2026 Accessibility Plan. The process undertaken was in accordance with the Accessible British Columbia Act and Regulation from the Province of B.C. The RDN Accessibility Plan will be reviewed and updated every three years.

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) Board endorsed the organization’s inaugural 2023-2026 Accessibility Plan (the Plan) on October 24, 2023.

The Plan will guide the organization’s accessibility and inclusion efforts over the next three years and beyond. The Plan recommends 18 foundational actions (listed on pages 8 to 11 of the Plan) to address accessibility and inclusion barriers across four areas of focus: employer context, service delivery, communications and implementation. The RDN is committed to providing the highest level of public service to its residents and others and will integrate accessibility and inclusion into its employer practices, service delivery, public communications and work planning. Over the long term, this proactive approach will involve the ongoing identification, removal and prevention of barriers encountered by persons with disabilities when interacting with the RDN.

Public feedback is invited on the Plan. The Plan can be viewed at here and input can be submitted by completing the feedback form here. To request a print version of the Plan or to provide feedback via letter, email, over the phone or in person, please contact our HR department at 250-390-4111 or by email at accessibility@rdn.bc.ca.
