Project Update

A Community Trail Network Plan has been created based on the engagement results and was approved by the RDN Board in May 2023. The Plan is available in the Documents section of this page. Based on this Plan, there are three trail improvement projects currently underway:

1) Stormwater Community Park

  • A pedestrian crossing will be constructed to connect two trail segments and create a continuous trail between Honey Wulff Close and Kaye Road. This was originally envisioned to be a pedestrian bridge and has since changed to a culvert for cost and long term maintenance considerations.
  • The design of the culvert requires an engineer to account for the seasonal stormwater flows through the ponds. The design work is currently underway and is expected to be completed in Fall 2023.
  • Construction is expected to take place in late 2023 and be complete before the end of the year. Inclement weather and contractor availability may delay the project.

2) Internal Trail Network

  • The internal trail network connects Matuka Drive, Cinnamon Sedge Way, Rascal Lane, Peterson Road, Kaye Road, and Rivers Edge Drive through RDN parkland and through a section of undeveloped roadway at the end of Rascal Lane (provincially owned through the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure). These are shown as trail sections 1 - 5 in the Community Trail Network Plan.
  • Improvements will include removal of any standing dead trees that pose a hazard to trail users and improving drainage and trail surfacing in areas that are seasonally wet.
  • This work will take place in Fall 2023.

3) Roadside Trail Network

  • The roadside trail network will consist of improved pedestrian trails constructed along the west side of Peterson Road from Caddis Crescent to Kaye Road, and along the south side of Kaye Road from Peterson Road to the driveway access near Rascal Lane in Rivers Edge Community Park. If project budget allows, an additional section of trail will be constructed on the west side of Peterson Road between Caddis Crescent and Stone Fly Close. These are shown as trail sections 6 - 8 in the Community Trail Network Plan.
  • The new trails will be constructed within the road allowance, and will require approval from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MoTI). The trails will be gravel, 1.0 - 1.5m wide, and will include considerations for drainage and driveway crossings where required.
  • The design work for the trails is currently underway. Construction is anticipated to take place in late 2023 to early 2024. The review and approval process with MoTI, inclement weather, and contractor availability are potential sources of project delays.
