What is active transportation?

    Active transportation is human-powered travel including walking, cycling and rolling (mobility aids, wheelchairs scooters, skateboards) - that helps people move safely without relying on personal vehicles.

    Active transportation users range from children to seniors and people of all abilities. It's an inclusive, sustainable and affordable way to connect to where we live, work and play - supporting both daily needs and recreation.

    How is the East Wellington and Pleasant Valley Active Transportation Network Plan funded?

    The plan is funded through a combination of local and provincial sources. Funding from the Electoral Area C Community Parks service budget is complemented by a grant from the Union of BC Municipalities Active Transportation Planning program. This supports planning and engagement, helping position the project for future implementation and additional funding opportunities.

    Who is leading the project?

    The Regional District of Nanaimo is leading the project, with consulting support from Aplin & Martin Consultants Ltd.

    What will the East Wellington and Pleasant Valley Active Transportation Network Plan include?

    The plan will:

    • Identify key destinations and routes, such as schools, parks, community services and regional connections
    • Recommend priority infrastructure projects based on technical analysis and community input
    • Provide phased implementation strategies to support incremental budgeting and capital planning

    How will the East Wellington and Pleasant Valley Active Transportation Network Plan improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists?

    The plan will identify needed infrastructure upgrades—like sidewalks, crosswalks, bike lanes and lighting—tailored to East Wellington and Pleasant Valley’s rural context. These improvements will address current safety gaps and make walking and cycling viable for more people of all ages and abilities.

    Will the East Wellington and Pleasant Valley Active Transportation Network Plan affect traffic or parking in the area?

    Active transportation improvements are designed to work alongside—not replace—existing roads and parking. We'll work with the community to ensure solutions consider everyone's needs, from drivers to cyclists to pedestrians.

    Who can participate in providing input in the East Wellington and Pleasant Valley Active Transportation Network Plan?

    Everyone is welcome to share input. We especially encourage participation from:

    • Residents of Electoral Area C - East Wellington and Pleasant Valley
    • Organizations connected to the area, such as the schools, transportation agencies, local businesses and regional tourism groups
    • City of Nanaimo residents along the Jingle Pot Road and East Wellington Road corridors

    Your perspective matters and will help ensure the plan reflects diverse needs.

    Once finalized, the plan will guide future infrastructure investments and will help the Regional District of Nanaimo apply for funding and grants.
