Work on the Gabriola Skatepark continues in 2022. Despite the challenging weather conditions in fall 2021 the contractor has made excellent progress on the project.

The work completed last year includes rock breaking and removal, installation of the site drainage system, and completion of the concrete skatepark. Next steps for the project in 2022 include installation of a new gravel parking lot, a concrete viewing area for the skatepark, and gravel paths connecting throughout the park.

Although the skatepark portion is complete, the fenced area of the park is still a construction site and is closed to the public. The park will be open to the public once the construction work is fully complete. The anticipated completion date, pending weather, is March 31, 2022.

Work on the Gabriola Skatepark in Huxley Community Park began on September 15.

A number of trees need to be removed to accommodate the new skatepark. This work will take place from September 15 to September 21. During tree removal work, the whole park will be closed to the public to ensure everyone’s safety.

The wood from the trees being removed will be donated to the local Lions Club for their firewood program. A minimum of two replacement trees for each tree removed will be planted in a local community park in 2022.

After September 21, construction work will continue and a portion of the park will re-open for public use. The playground, tennis court, and sport court areas will be accessible to the public. The parking lot will be closed for the duration of the project.

Occasional traffic disruptions may occur during construction. Please exercise caution and obey all signage placed in the area for your safety.
