Gabriola Village Way Path

The construction of this 1.5km path was completed in the spring of 2021.

Since the completion, staff have addressed local concerns regarding sightlines and visibility at various intersections where the path meets commercial driveways.

A signage plan has been created and approved by MoTI to further increase the safety of the path. The installation of new signs is anticipated to start in fall 2021 and be complete by the end of the year.

Work on the Village Way path project resumed on March 15^th and substantial completion was achieved April 28, 2021.

Construction actives during this second phase of the project included the following tasks:

• Completion of storm drainage works in preparation for paving
• Completion of guard railings on retaining walls
• Sawcut existing asphalt
• Fine grade and preparation for paving
• Road paving and curbing
• Line painting
• Pathway and driveway preparation and paving
• Relocation of signage

The Path is open to the public as we work with our Contractor to rectify and wrap-up some minor deficiencies.

We have also identified some potential improvements that could enhance our final product and we are actively working through the details with our project stakeholders.

In general the RDN will be responsible to maintain the pathway portion of the trail and the Ministry will maintain the storm drainage systems, curbs, and everything road-side of the curbs.

Work continues on retaining wall construction and gravel base preparation along the full length of the path corridor. Due to weather conditions and paving material availability, final asphalt and gravel path surfacing will occur as a second phase in the spring of 2021. When the first phase of construction is complete, the path will be open for public use over the winter and resemble a widened road shoulder.

In the early stages of construction, the RDN identified additional opportunities to retain trees within the path corridor. A detailed assessment of the trees throughout the village core was conducted using a hydro-excavator to expose the tree root systems. This exploratory digging allowed a professional arborist to determine whether retaining wall construction would damage the trees beyond their ability to recover, and minimized the number of trees removed. Additional trees have also been kept in front of the Gabriola Elementary School by realigning the path around existing trees and altering construction methods.
