Cedar Community Park Improvements

The need for a playground in the Cedar area has been identified by the community. The land adjacent to the Cedar Skate Park has been identified as a suitable location for the new playground.

Outdoor pickleball and basketball courts in the Cedar area, have also been identified by the community. The RDN is working with School District 68 on ways to accommodate community use of Cedar Community Secondary School lands for these amenities.

In addition to the playground and pickleball courts, a new bike pump track has been completed at the site. The bike pump track was completed by the Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation in memory of Mike Davidson, a long time BMX executive and supporter. The RDN will now manage and maintain the pump track.

A draft concept plan was presented to the Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) showing how these amenities could be integrated within the Cedar Skate Park lands and School District 68 property.

    In May 2024, the Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation contacted the RDN to inquire on the possibility of building a pump track on the land adjacent to the Cedar Skate Park. Following this request, a draft concept plan was developed and presented to the Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) on June 19, 2024 showing the bike pump track and playground on the Cedar Skate Park lands and two pickleball courts on the existing tennis court at the Cedar Community Secondary School. The Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation also appeared as a delegation at this meeting.

    In May 2024, the Stevie Smith Legacy Foundation contacted the RDN to inquire on the possibility of building a pump track on the land adjacent to the Cedar Skate Park. Following this request, a draft concept plan was developed and presented to the Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) on June 19, 2024 showing the bike pump track and playground on the Cedar Skate Park lands and two pickleball courts on the existing tennis court at the Cedar Community Secondary School.   • Updated Location for Multi-age Playground

    At the March 6, 2024, Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) meeting, the potential locations for a playground were discussed further. Committee members requested that the playground be placed in a central location with good visibility and to serve multiple age groups. It was determined that the field adjacent to the skate park, of which the RDN holds a 10-year non-exclusive license with School District 68 (SD68) for future use, would be a good fit for a new playground. In addition to a multi-age playground, requests for pickleball courts and a pump track in this area have also been received.

    At the March 6, 2024, Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) meeting, the potential locations for a playground were discussed further.   • Proposed Tennis Court Conversion

    At the November 22, 2023, Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) meeting, a delegation proposed converting the existing tennis court into a pickleball and tennis court facility at Cedar Secondary School. The delegation cited the positive impact of having pickleball courts at this location for pickleball participants in the community and the committee members agreed that establishing a pickleball court at this location should be pursued.

    At the November 22, 2023, Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) meeting, a delegation proposed converting the existing tennis court into a pickleball and tennis court facility at Cedar Secondary School. The delegation cited the positive impact of having pickleball courts at this location for pickleball participants in the community and the committee members agreed that establishing a pickleball court at this location should be pursued.

  • Playground Location Feasibility

    At the May 24, 2022, the Electoral Area A Parks, Recreation and Culture Committee (PRCC) meeting " it was moved and seconded that staff investigate the feasibility of a small playground at the Cedar Plaza." Following this motion, staff explored the possibility of placing a small playground at the Cedar Plaza and, due to the topography, parcel size and proximity to the road, staff determined that the plaza was not a suitable location for a playground. Other locations within the Cedar area were explored, including the Cedar Heritage Centre and Cedar Skate Park.
