The Chase River Pump Station and its twin forcemains along Haliburton Street are critical components of wastewater infrastructure. Together, they receive residential wastewater from south Nanaimo and deliver it to the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre.
Chase River Forcemains No. 1 and 2 were installed in 1980 and 1998, respectively. Forcemain No. 1 must be replaced and the pump station, also built in the 1980's, requires an updgrade to its pumping capacity. Investing in our infrastructure today is necessary to maintain effective operation into the future.
The City of Nanaimo Capital Plan identifies the replacement of the Haliburton watermain and the City's Transportation Master Plan identifies a multi-use cycling/pedestrian path along the same stretch of road. The pump station and forcemain upgrade project presents an opportunity to partner with the City of Nanaimo and combine these activities into one coordinated construction project. This will allow the RDN and City of Nanaimo to reduce overall cost and disruption to the taxpayer by coordinating engineering, procurement and construction resources.
