The Regional District of Nanaimo’s Team WaterSmart, in partnership with many great local organizations and municipalities, is excited to host a variety of activities and events to celebrate both World Water Day and Earth Day. Water to Earth Month 2018 will have something for everyone with workshops, stream walks, river rafting, swimming events, educational tours, streamkeepers courses, and movie nights.

Check out all of the great upcoming initiatives being offered throughout the Regional District of Nanaimo. We will keep our community calendar up-to-date with where to find Team WaterSmart - whether it's fun community events, educational workshops, or adventurous outdoor activities.

Water conservation and environmental protection are values shared by all of us so come get involved and help to appreciate our water...because every drop counts!

Summer/Fall 2023:

  • WellSmart Workshop - Two in person workshops will be held this fall, October 26 at Gabriola Aggi Hall and November 1 at East Wellington Cavalotti Hall- Register Here. Check out the recording from our last WellSmart session. rdn.bc.ca/wellsmart submit any questions to watersmart@rdn.bc.ca.
  • River's Day 2023: The City of Nanaimo is hosting several events around the area this year and Team WaterSmart will be there! Come for a tour of the Nanaimo River Watershed and treatment plant, join local water health experts on a walk along the Nanaimo River, or be more adventurous and go for a float along the river. All activities can be found in the City of Nanaimo Activiety Guide- page 45
  • Water Saver Contest- Tell us what you are doing to be WaterSmart this summer to enter to win a rainbarrel prize pack, Contest Closes Sept 25, 2023. Enter by commenting on Facebook or Instagram or send us an email at watersmart@rdn.bc.ca and don't forget to enter your details to recieve a Team WaterSmart yard sign.
  • Team WaterSmart in your community - Check out our events calendar to see when Team WaterSmart will be in your community with our interactive booth.
  • Grade 4 and 5 teachers in SD 68&69- Watershed Field Trips are back this year! Also, check out Freshwater Connections- Water Where We Live school modules for Grades K-7.
  • Students! Do you have water-friendly landscape design ideas to share? Check out our ideas board.

W2E Video Series Quiz Contest

  Ready to win some great environmentally themed prizes during Water to Earth month? Check out our new short video series and answer a quiz and you could win. Prizes include a rainbarrel, native plants and seeds, reusable coffee and water containers, an umbrella and zero waste kits.

    Improving wetland function while providing a home for native animals

    We have a wetland pond which empties into the Chase River via an ephemeral Creek on our 5 acre condo property. This is part of the Chase River watershed and serves to help filter run-off before it enters the Chase. Approximately 1/3 has been left natural. This area became overcome with Himalayan Blackberries. We removed virtually all of this invasive species, and with the help of the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund and the Nanaimo & Area Land Trust as well as 25 volunteers planted over 200 native plants which are now beginning to bud out - providing a natural habitat...
