Cedar Village Active Transportation Network Planning

The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is developing an Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP) for Cedar Village in Electoral Area A, to enhance active transportation options and strengthen connections to local amenities and services. The plan supports safety and accessibility for residents and visitors of all ages and abilities.

Building on previous planning efforts, the ATNP serves as the next step in advancing active transportation in the area. The plan builds on the 2009 Electoral Area A Active Transportation Plan and the 2013 Cedar Main Street Village Plan, while taking a more detailed look at existing conditions and identifying opportunities to improve infrastructure that supports walking, cycling, and other active transportation modes.

Why It Matters

  • Safer Routes - Improve safety for walking, biking and rolling
  • Better Connections - Link homes to schools, parks, businesses and services
  • Climate Action - Support low-carbon travel and healthy lifestyles
  • Funding Opportunities - Position the community for provincial and federal infrastructure grant funding

  • I have always been curious if we could have a roundabout upon entering Cedar before the Highschool (Macmillan and Holden Corso)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) is currently focused on planning for active transportation improvements—such as walking, cycling, and other forms of non-motorized travel. While roadway changes like roundabouts are not a primary focus of this plan, we absolutely want to hear your ideas. Please share your feedback through our online survey and at the open house on November 26

All feedback will be included in our Phase 1 engagement summary, and any suggestions related to roadway design that are outside the scope of active transportation will be passed along to the Ministry of Transportation and Transit (MoTT) for their consideration.

  • I live on Gould rd west in Cedar. I see that a solution to the unsafe walkways to the school is finally being addressed. I have stood at the crosswalk many times and the speed of the cars ignoring me was frightening. The need for a sidewalk from the school to Cedar rd is undeniable. A comment on another stretch of rd that concerns me is McMillan rd behind Friesen Rentals. Last year I saw a young girl wading through a foot of water to get home. These kids that live close enough to walk should never have to do this. But year after year the road floods and nothing is done.

Thank you for sharing your concerns. The Cedar Village Active Transportation Network Plan is being developed to identify priority improvements for safe and accessible walking and cycling routes, including connections to schools.  Your input will help shape the final plan, which will guide future projects and funding decisions. Please share more through the survey or join us at the November 26 open house.
