Gabriola Streamkeepers
Since 2012, this small group of dedicated Gabriola Island residents have been working hard to preserve and enhance their local waterways. By continuously engaging the public, they are creating awareness of the importance of the streams and habitat to residents and visitors alike. Over the years they have led several stream clean ups, installed creek crossing signs, monitored water quality and attended and organized numerous community events. They have been a vital part of the RDN’s Community Watershed Monitoring Network by monitoring Mallett Creek, a salmon-bearing creek that is subject to high flows and bank erosion from storm water run-off. In preparation for restoration work on the creek, the group has been conducting surveys over the past few years and collecting baseline data to allow them to monitor changes. We wish the the best of luck in planning and carrying out this important effort! If you are a Gabriola resident and want to know how you can get involved, visit www.galtt.ca/gabriolastreamkeepers.html
